Helpful guidelines for writing a thesis of high quality

Create a Thesis of High Quality

Thesis of high quality requires much time and efforts. This is not a policy paper or an extended essay. In order to write a good dissertation you have to be well-versed in methodology, theoretical framework, data collection and analysis as well as providing good argumentation. However, all of these goals are possible to achieve if follow this guide.

  • Select a topic which has not been researched yet. Good dissertations have added value and introduce some innovations as well as new knowledge to your field. Try to go to the library and read high quality research papers and monographs. Some authors could give you an idea on topics which lack answers and study. You can also turn to your supervisor and ask him for a piece of advice. If you are lucky your supervisor will suggest you a good topic.
  • Think of your theoretical framework. This is something which makes research paper different from other pieces. A good dissertation contains the right use of theories, their testing or building. If you feel that you can come up with a theory do not hesitate to try because it will definitely make your work much more valuable.
  • Correct choice of methodology is also very important. You can choose between qualitative and quantitative methods both of which are quite complicated. If you feel that you are strong in math go for quantitative methods such as statistics however, if you are good in interviewing people or performing a discourse analysis select the second option. Choice of methodology is closely related to data collection. If you want to get a good grade use not only the existing data but collect it from people in a form of survey, questionnaire or interview.
  • Make sure that your topic is not too broad. The most common mistake of all students is choosing the topic which are not appropriate for a thesis format. If you are a student you can research too broad and complicated things because you are limited in time and word count. From the other hand, do not make your topic too narrow because it will be hard to find literature.
  • Within your paper you can either pose questions or test a hypothesis. Both ways are good and equally hard, however, if you are a social scientist it is better not to test a hypothesis but to use a question format. Hypothesis are often correlated with quantitative testing and if you are not ready to use statistics select few questions you want to answer within your research. Do not include too many questions because the scope of the thesis does not allow you to do that. Furthermore, it can refocus your attention from the main problem to secondary ones.
  • Consult with your supervisor on all issues and do not miss the deadlines. Master seminars and pre-defense events are there to help you to correct your mistakes and get some valuable ideas from professors or fellow students. Furthermore, you can show your work to professors from other departments or institutions in order to consult and get some feedback.
